UMPQUA RIVER REFLECTIONS

UMPQUA RIVER REFLECTIONS

I took this image from a beautiful, and relatively new, footbridge over the Umpqua River. It was about a two mile hike from our BLM campground at Susan Creek.

I highly recommend the Susan Creek Campground as one of the cleanest, modern, and well-kept sites we ever encountered. My other experiences with BLM campgrounds are usually those of lesser facilities such as pit toilets, little shade, and seldom do the have potable water.

THE OTHERS NUMBER FIVE

THE OTHERS NUMBER FIVE

I really enjoy looking at this image, however, I have yet to print it. I am holding off in general, from printing because I am rethinking the whole notion of how to “exhibit” imagery in a gallery setting.

I am seeing images from other photographers that are presented “nude”- without glass. Often these images are printed on canvas, and are many-times quite large. These images to me, have a huge visual impact, and are nearly impossible to ignore.

They contrast with the traditional black-framed, white matted, under glass examples that I have been using since my college days. I think this school of thought was for some reason established during the heydays of monochromatic printing. I think that era was during a time when photography was still not considered by many artists to be a legitimate art form. I think that issue motivated the de facto leaders of the photographic movement to establish some rules as to what was acceptable. I think that format is being broken. I sure am inspired to “break out”.

THE OTHERS

THE OTHERS

I am working on a series of images that are “The Others”. I think that I am showing imagery that in normal circumstances is something with which we are familiar, but shown in a different light and context; they appear to become something else. What they become is established in part, by the artist in concert with the interpretation of the viewer.

My question to you: what do you see in this image?

I have nothing to add. Hopefully, the title and the image tell the story.

LONE OAK IN DROUGHT-RIDDEN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

LONE OAK IN DROUGHT-RIDDEN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

I am revisiting my images from my March trip to Pinnacles National Park. This landscape scene is located not far from the park. It is in a portion of the state that I never visited prior to this trip. The hills were dabbled with some new green grass as it had rained a week or so before. I doubt that the green lasted, and I imagine the cattle in that area are eating imported feed.

I am saw more disturbing signs of the drought while I was in Yosemite last month. The snow pack was only evident on the high peaks, and at Tuolumne there was a near total absence of snow.

Where we live in the redwood forest, there is a stream just behind our property – it is as dry now as I have ever seen it be. Our weather has been ideal for this month. It is sunny every day, and the normal summer-time fog is flat out absent. I understand that the redwoods rely at least in part, on fog for their hydration. It seems that if this is related to climate change that we are acquiring the climate that the Monterey Bay area has/had. I suppose that I should just enjoy it, but I cannot escape the fact that my wells are drying up and that we may need to get by on extreme rationing – soon. I sure do hope that people in the rest of the west come to terms with the idea of conservation.

LIGHT IN THE NIGHT

LIGHT IN THE NIGHT

Boulders and the Night Sky at Joshua Tree
I love going back through my catalog of images with a fresh set of eyes. Oftentimes, I discover what it was that I saw at the time I took the photograph. This image is an example of that process.

THE OTHERS, CONTINUED

THE OTHERS, CONTINUED

Does this image transcend common reality – at least a little bit? It does for me. I will admit that I did not see this exactly as it is now rendered, but I knew that there was something else in there to be found.

LOOKING DEEPER

LOOKING DEEPER

WHAT IS REALITY?
Imagination: “an image that is created within one’s mind” – my definition.
I cannot control what another sees within their mind, but I think I can plant a seed of awareness. That is as far as I want to go – I do want to share what I sense, but I want the viewer to have their own “creation” within the realm of their imagination.
