SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRANSPORTAION COMAPANY’S BAKERSFIELD YARD AND ROUNDHOUSE

I took this photograph in 1976 in the early morning hours from one of the sand towers at Bakersfield near the completion of a midnight hostler shift. Notice that the water tank is gone from its former location between the roundhouse office in the foreground, and the crew dispatcher/RFE building near the center of the image. Note the Yard Office and switchman's shanty at about the three o'clock position. Behind that are the Santa Fe transfer tracks. The two locomotives at the crew dispatcher's office are yard engines while the locomotive adjacent to the roundhouse is for a local (all yard engines faced west at Bakersfield).

BEAR MOUNTAIN NEAR BAKERSFIELD

Bear Mountain, 2006
For me, Bear Mountain has always been something of a reference point. Any time I travel back to Bakersfield the first thing I look for is either Bear Mountain or Breckenridge Mountain. The two mountains are neighbors, and when the air is clear, and they are visible, they become my visual anchors.

This particular image conveys some of the visual possibilities that the southern San Joaquin Valley can offer. I hope that with the coming rains that these hills again become green, and that the poppies again offer their orange highlights to the landscape.

MADRID, NEW MEXICO

20141120_Madrid, New Mexico_01

I had an extra day while I was in New Mexico, so I took a drive through Madrid. In 2005 I rode my bicycle through this town, and since then, I wanted to go back with my camera. This is my first image from that little outing ten days ago. I will process more in the coming days.
