About Thomas Bethune

THOMAS ALLEN BETHUNE I have been interested in photography for most of my life. I started taking photographs with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera when I was eight years old. My early subjects were trains and engineered structures as well as landscapes and family portraits. My interests and vision have matured, but the subjects that catch my eye continue to be of the same genre as my earliest visions. A neighbor man had a darkroom, and he showed me the basics of camera operation and darkroom processing. I took courses in art and photography in high school and college. I worked as an apprentice to a commercial wedding and event photographer, and I was in charge of a recreational dark room while I was in the military. As an adult, I earned a bachelor’s degree in photography from Humboldt State University. My experience with film formats included 35mm, 2 ¼”, and 4”x 5”. I exhibited at galleries near my home in Arcata California, and in Santa Fe New Mexico. All my current work is digital. I am scanning many of my legacy negatives and slides. I sometimes process and print the scanned negatives. I often post them on my blog. I process all of my prints with archival media. An award winning fine art photographer living in a redwood forest. ARCATA PLAZA EARLY MORNING PERSPECTIVE

I took this photograph in 2010. I took it because there were elements within the composition that spoke to me at a subconscious level. What I mean is that I did not fully grasp the totality of what was within … Continue reading

MORE SACRAMENTO VALLEY RICE

Oftentimes, I need input from others about my images. I cannot decide between the above images which one best portrays the overall feeling of the structure. I did rate the image without the railcars as the higher ranking, but I … Continue reading

SOUTHERN PACIFIC FREIGHT TRAIN IN THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY

I took this photograph sometime in the mid nineteen-eighties with my old Rollicord. The tonality and hues of this image are a bit unique. The scanned print started out as a black and white image. I then “hand-tinted” with Marshal … Continue reading

B-17 AT ARCATA AIRPORT SIXTY YEARS AFTER WWII

I made these photographs in 2012 when the Collings Foundation WWII bombers were there on display. I like that I was able to incorporate one of the few, at the time, remaining structures from the former WWII naval air station. … Continue reading

VINTAGE AIRCRAFT AT ACV FORTY YEARS AFTER WW II

I would need to dig through my old negative files to confirm the date when I took these two photographs, but I am not going to do so today. I took them with my Korona 4×5 view camera, and I … Continue reading
